CPU

At this budget, we're using the new AMD Ryzen 5 3600X. We upgraded to the 3600X to get a better stock cooler and slightly better performance than the 3600. The cooler will allow for moderate overclocks without overheating or becoming noisy.

Note: If you'd prefer to consider a similar build, but instead using an Intel processor, be sure to check out our Enthusiast Intel Gaming Build Guide.

Motherboard

We're using a parametric filter to constantly select the best-priced motherboard while meeting selected criteria. In this case, we are filtering for the ATX B550 chipset and up to 4 DDR4 DIMM slots for future expansion. The compatibility engine will filter out anything not compatible with the build, and it will automatically update with the best priced option as prices change.

The B550 chipset was selected rather than the B450 chipset in order to bypass any BIOS update issues that would occur when combining a new Ryzen 3000 series (Zen 2) CPU with a B450 chipset and guarantee compatibility with 4000 series Ryzen when it releases. However, you are welcome to explore those options as well, but be aware that because it uses an older chipset, this motherboard may require a BIOS update before it will be compatible with the CPU. The manufacturer may have already updated the B450 BIOS before sending it to retailers, but if not, many motherboards cannot be updated without using an older CPU to do so.

If the motherboard is not updated, the PC is unlikely to boot at all with the new CPU. In this case, you would need to temporarily use an older CPU to update the motherboard BIOS before using a new CPU with it. The CPUs that could do this update would be the Ryzen 1000 CPUs, Ryzen 2000 APUs, and Ryzen 2000 CPUs.

If you stick with the B550 chipset on original part list provided, you will not have to deal with this process.

Memory

We are filtering for a 2x8GB kit of DDR4 RAM with a speed of DDR4-3600 and maximum Cas latency of 16 as Ryzen CPUs scale well with faster memory.

Since the parametric filter picks the lowest priced option available (regardless of color/design), click the "From parametric filter" link to view other options that might better suit your aesthetic preference.

GPU

For our GPU, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super is one of the best price for performance cards on the market. The RTX 2080 Super will provide a consistent 60fps on many demanding games like PUBG) at Ultra at 1080p, and even 1440p for some games like Apex Legends. It'll also handle Fortnite with zero issues. For those interested in VR, this card will have no problem playing any and and all applications currently on the market.

For streaming, the newly-updated NVENC encoding will offload the task to the GPU with a minimal performance hit using OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) while providing image quality similar to or better than x264 Fast quality.

Case

All of our components are housed in the Lian Li LANCOOL II Mesh RGB. This case features a black design with a tempered glass window. It includes 2x front panel USB 3 ports, one USB Type-C port, mesh RGB front panel, a PSU shroud, and a number of cable management holes and tie-offs to help your build look cleaner. It can also comfortably fit full-sized video cards and large CPU coolers.

PSU

For our power supply, we're using a parametric selection of well-reviewed semi or fully modular units, all of which are 80+ Gold certified or above and can provide plenty of power for this build.
